According to Purdue, eleven players from each team take the field of play during a cricket match. Both squads are allowed to carry substitutes in the event of an injury or illness.
Injured players must return to the field as soon as it is deemed safe for them to resume play. Substituted players may only field, and they are not allowed to bat, bowl or keep wicket. A well-balanced cricket team generally includes five specialist batsmen, four bowlers, one all rounder and one wicket keeper. There is no limit to the number of batsmen and bowlers, though players are often selected with the goal of keeping an equal distribution between the team's batting and bowling.
