How many puppies are commonly in a Chihuahua litter?

Chihuahua litters are generally small, consisting of between one to three puppies. While this is an average number, each litter is different and can vary in number of puppies born, as well as numerous other factors.

Because of the relatively small size of the breed and the shape of the puppy's head, many Chihuahua mothers have difficulty giving birth to a litter. A veterinarian is often required to perform an emergency c-section on the mother to remove the puppies in order to prevent the loss of either the mother or the litter. When this happens, the breeder must usually hand-feed the puppies for a few days while the mother recovers.
