How many puppies does a Yorkie usually have?

A Yorkie usually has three to five puppies in a litter. Most of the smaller-breed dogs have smaller litters from one to five puppies while larger breeds have larger litters, reports the American Kennel Club.
The litter size of a Yorkie also depends on the age of the female dog and whether the litter is the first litter for the dog. The litter size will also vary depending upon whether or not artificial insemination is used and whether or not the female dog is having heat cycles too close together, "leading to early embryonic death," states the American Kennel Club. The "Yorkie" is the affectionate shortened term for the AKC-recognized breed, the Yorkshire Terrier.
