The amount of pushups the average person should be able to do varies based on age and gender. The average range is 17 to 29 for a man in his twenties, 13 to 24 for a man in his thirties and 11 to 20 for a man in his forties.
Women can do less pushups on average because they generally have 20 percent less muscle than men. Pushups exercise muscles in the arms, chest, abdominals, hips and legs. The ability to perform pushups can help a person withstand the aging process. Fitness pioneer Jack LaLanne once set a record by performing 1,000 pushups in 23 minutes.
