How many quarters are there in hockey?

There are three periods in a regulation-length hockey game. Hockey is not played in quarters; each game is divided into three frames: the first, second and third periods.

Total playing time for each game is one hour; there are three 20-minute periods separated by two 15-minute breaks. If the game is tied at the end of regulation time, sudden death overtime is played, and if the game remains tied after that, a shoot-out is used to determine the winner. Rules regarding post-regulation play vary between regular season games and playoff games, and Olympic hockey, NHL hockey and other leagues use their own variations of the overtime and shoot-out formula.
