During the 1980 Winter Olympics semifinal round hockey game against the Soviet Union, United States goaltender Jim Craig made 30 saves. In the game that has become know as the "Miracle on Ice" game, Craig led the Americans to a 4-3 victory. Two days later with Craig again in goal, the U.S. defeated Finland 4-2 to win the gold medal.
Going into the 1980 Winter Olympics, the United States was a heavy underdog to the older, more seasoned Russian team. After two periods, the Americans trailed 3-2. However, Craig shut down the Russians in the final period and the Americans tallied goals from Mark Johnson and Mike Eruzione to come from behind for the victory.
