There were 11 ships in the First Fleet that sailed to Botany Bay, Australia. The names of some of these ships were the Lady Penrhyn, HMS Sirius, the Golden Grove and the Prince of Wales. These ships left Great Britain in 1787 and arrived in Botany Bay in 1788.
The First Fleet is the name given to the 11 ships that carried the people who established the first settlement in Australia, which was a penal colony. There were over 1,480 men, women and children aboard these ships. Six of the ships were carrying 579 male convicts, 193 female convicts and 14 convict children. The other vessels were two naval ships and three supply ships that carried animals, tools, building materials and clothing.
