How many spider monkeys are left in the wild?

While an exact population count for members of all spider monkey species is unavailable, the spider monkey population is decreasing as of 2014. There is one species listed as vulnerable, four species listed as endangered and two species listed as critically endangered.

Spider monkey populations are vulnerable because of the monkeys' low birth rates and high value as a food source in their native countries. Female spider monkeys give birth to one baby per two to five years, and the monkeys are heavily hunted by humans. They are also threatened by destruction of their habitats as a result of deforestation. They are also vulnerable to malaria.
