The ServSafe® Food Handler Program requires only one test. After completing a one- to two-hour course on food safety, personal hygiene, cross-contamination and allergens, time and temperature, and cleaning and sanitation, the student is eligible to take the assessment exam.
The ServSafe® Food Handler Program assessment exam consists of 40 questions and has no time limit. To receive certification, the student must achieve a score of 75 percent or higher. However, not all states recognize a ServSafe® certification as a valid food handler permit.
ServSafe.com offers the course and exam online in English and Spanish. Instructor-led courses are available in some states. Language options for the print exam include English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese and Burmese.
The National Restaurant Association oversees the ServSafe® Food Handler Program.
