As of January 2015, McDonald's employs approximately 1.9 million people in stores that are located in more than 100 countries. Approximately 80 percent of McDonald's restaurants are franchised. According to its official website, there are over 35,000 McDonald locations around the world that serve nearly 70 million people daily.

The first McDonald's location was opened by Dick and Mac McDonald in San Bernandino, California, in 1948. The brand expanded rapidly over the next two decades. More than 1,000 McDonald's locations were open in the United States by the end of the 1960s. McDonald's opened its first international franchise in British Columbia, Canada in 1967.
