How many years of college does it take to be a zoologist?

Entry-level zoologists need at least a bachelor's degree, which equals about four years of college. Higher-level zoologists need master's degrees, meaning about two additional years of college. Some zoologist jobs, such as those in university research, require doctorate degrees, which take at least a few additional years.

Prospective zoologists should obtain their bachelor's degrees in zoology or related fields, such as ecology. Classes cover topics like chemistry, mathematics, computer science, anatomy, cellular biology and specific groups of animals. Zoologists who have doctorates often work independently, leading research groups and conducting projects. They may also have to secure their own funding.
