What are the markings inside a ring?

The markings inside a ring shank indicate the type of metal, the karat weights or the name of the manufacturer, designer or jeweler. The most common stamp is the karat weight of the metal.
Gold is typically expressed as 10k, 14k or 18k. Pure gold is 24k. Other weights contain a percentage of gold mixed with other alloys to strengthen the metal. For example, 14k gold is 58.5 percent gold mixed with other metals.
Another common stamp shows the carat weight of the gem set in the ring, expressed as a number. A marking such as .50 indicates a diamond that is half a carat, while a marking of 1.25 refers to a diamond measuring one and a quarter carats.
