Massachusetts is located in the northeastern United States. The state is bordered by New York on the west side, Rhode Island and Connecticut on the south side and New Hampshire and Vermont on the north side.

Massachusetts is one of six states in the New England region of the country. As of November, 2014, it is ranked as the 14th most populated state in the country, despite being the 7th smallest. Overall, it has the third highest population density in the United States. Massachusetts contains many locations of historical importance such as Harvard University and Plymouth, which is the location of one of the first settlements in the New World.
