Jasper Johns used hot beeswax blended with color pigments to create his paintings on the canvas' surface. The wax was so thick during application, that the paintings ended up 5 inches deep from the canvas, which gave the paintings an appearance of a sculpture or tapestry that hangs on the wall.
Jasper Johns' paintings usually fall under the abstract expressionism term. The art movement was an American painting movement that began in New York in the 1940s. Most abstract expressionistic paintings featured no recognizable content. Johns took images and pictures from mass pop culture items like comic books and advertising.
