What does "median" mean in mathematics?

The median is the number that is in the middle in a list of sorted numbers. To find the median, the numbers must be sorted from lowest to highest.
If there is an odd amount of numbers, the median is the number in the middle with an equal amount of numbers above it and below it. For example, in the sequence 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, the number 3 is in the middle with two numbers on either side, so the median is 3.
When there is an even amount of numbers, one finds the median by locating the two middle numbers in the sequence, adding them together and dividing by two. In the sequence 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, the two middle numbers are 3 and 4. When they are added together and divided by two, they yield a median of 3.5.
