The Mauna Loa volcano makes up half of the island of Hawaii where it is situated, and it is the world's largest active volcano. It measures 60 miles long, 30 miles wide and it is 13,680 feet above sea level. Another 16,400 feet of the volcano is below sea level.
Mauna Loa is classified as a shield volcano, meaning that it has a gentle slope resulting from many lava flows over time. Between 1832 and August 2014, it erupted 39 times with the last eruption taking place in 1984. The stretch from 1984 to 2014 without an eruption is an unusually long one for the Mauno Loa volcano.
