Meadowlarks eat a variety of bugs and insects, including grubs, caterpillars, grasshoppers, spiders and crickets. When insects are scarce in the winter, the meadowlark will eat seeds, corn and wild growing fruits, but the majority of its diet is bugs. Both the eastern and western meadowlark have the same diet.

Meadowlarks will come to bird feeders in the winter, eating a variety of provided seeds and nuts. These birds hunt by walking along the ground and using their beaks to poke around for bugs or insects. In the winter, the meadowlark will eat seed that falls to the ground or hunt for the seeds of weeds. The meadowlark will not eat grains.
