What does it mean when you order a bourbon neat?

A bourbon neat is a shot of bourbon poured into a rocks glass and served plain, at room temperature, with no ice or mixers. The term "neat" is used when ordering a single liquor and does not apply to mixed drinks.

"Neat" is sometimes confused with the term "straight up," which means chilled and strained to remove the ice. A shot of bourbon "on the rocks" has ice in the glass.

Although bourbon is a type of whiskey, it has a significantly different flavor than other whiskeys. Bourbon, which contains at least 51 percent corn, is aged in charred oak barrels.
