The name "Edelweiss" stems from two German words, with "edel" meaning "nobility" and the word "weiss" meaning "white." The Edelweiss flower is a flower indigenous to the country of Austria and surrounding areas, and it is found often in the Alps.

Because of its commonality in Austria, the Edelweiss is the national flower and is printed on Euros that are circulated in Austria. The flower is a symbol of nobility as well as courage. "Edelweiss" is also the title of a well-known song from the musical "The Sound of Music." Because of this usage, the flower and song also represent the advent of Austrian patriotism during the invasion by the Nazis in 1939.
