When is the Medicare enrollment period?

As per Medicare's website, the initial enrollment period for Medicare Part A and Part B is seven months, starting three months prior to the applicant reaching 65 and ending three months after the applicant reaches 65. Once this passes, the enrollment period runs from January to March each year.
Medicare's website states that it automatically enrolls 65-year-old people into Medicare Part A and Part B if these people receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits. It further states that anyone who misses the initial period must pay higher premiums. There is also a special enrollment period for people who are covered by an insurance policy or are working as international volunteers.
