Do Medicare and Medicaid offer reimbursements?

Individuals insured by Medicaid may receive reimbursements for eligible medical expenses incurred during the three months before they applied for Medicaid, according the Department of Health & Hospitals. Individuals insured by Medicare may receive reimbursements for out-of-pocket expenses from providers who are not contractors with Medicare, reports Medicare.com.

Once an individual is approved for Medicaid and receives the Medicaid card, he is not eligible for reimbursements, states the Department of Health & Hospitals. Medicaid applicants only receive retroactive reimbursements if they met the eligibility requirements for Medicaid when they received the medical services.

Medicare participants only receive reimbursement for the amount of the services covered by the Medicare contract rate, meaning they still have to pay the difference between the Medicare rate and the actual charge from the service provider, explains Medicare.com.
