Treatment by a dermatologist may be covered by Medicare, according to Medicare.com. If the treatment is deemed medically necessary, Medicare covers the majority of the price of treatment and doctor visits. However, if the visit to the dermatologist is cosmetic or otherwise unnecessary, Medicare in unlike to pay the bill.

There may be some restrictions on dermatological treatment under Medicare, explains Medicare.com. For example, individuals with an HMO plan are only cleared to see a primary care physician and so are required to get a referral to a dermatologist before Medicare covers the visit. In most cases, Medicare covers 80 percent of the approved treatment amount.
