In 2013, Pharmacy Times and U.S. News named Tylenol, Excedrin and Advil as the headache medications most recommended by pharmacists, reports NY Daily News. Tylenol was the highest rated with 27 percent of the vote. It has few side effects and few dangerous interactions with other medications.

Excedrin followed with a 24 percent vote and Advil with a 23 percent vote, notes Daily News. Other major headache medications include Aleve, Motrin IB and Ecotrin. WebMD recommends avoiding caffeine-containing products while using over-the-counter headache medications, and people with liver problems should avoid Tylenol, which contains acetaminophen. More powerful medications and preventative remedies are available through a prescription.
