Corticosteroid creams, calcineurin inhibitors and oral antihistamines are all medications that can soothe itchy skin, according to Mayo Clinic. Antidepressants, such as Zoloft or Prozac, may also help to treat more severe cases of itchy skin.
Corticosteroid cream is applied topically, directly where the skin itches, explains Mayo Clinic. Once applied, covering the area with a moist cloth allows the medication to easily absorb into the skin. Calcineurin inhibitors, such as Protopic, may also work on itchy skin. To treat itchy skin from the inside, doctors recommend over-the-counter oral antihistamines, such as Zyrtec during the day, and Benadryl at night. Claritin is another popular oral antihistamine that may stop itching.
