Mel Kiper Jr. bases his draft picks on full-time research and televised game observation. He said in an interview with ESPN's website that he has eight televisions in his home and watches three simultaneously on game days.

Kiper Jr. got into draft analysis as an independent business in 1984. He was encouraged by Ernie Accorsi, the general manager of the Baltimore Colts at the time. In addition to watching live games and game tape, Kiper Jr. interviews college coaches and NFL general managers about draft prospects. Kiper Jr. claims to work on his craft on 361 days out of the year.
