The carpal, or wrist, bones are commonly memorized with the help of mnemonics. One of the most common is Some Lovers Try Positions That They Can't Handle.
There are eight carpal bones: the scaphoid, lunate, triquetral, pisiform, trapezium, trapezoid, capitate and hamate. The scaphoid is the largest of the proximal row. It is important for wrist stability and movement. The scaphoid is boat-shaped and may be divided into two poles: the proximal and distal.
The trapezium articulates with the scaphoid and has a number of surfaces: a rough, elongated rough, lateral and concave. It also has a sellar surface which projects away from the thumb and index finger.
