What are Mercruiser inboard engines?

Mercruiser inboard engines are a line of gas-powered, inboard-mounted boat engines made by the marine manufacturing company Mercury. As of August 2015, Mercury offers eight different Mercruiser inboard engine models, with sizes varying from 5.2 to 8.7 liters of displacement, specialized for either cruising or towing sports.
Inboard marine engines are mounted inside of the hull of a boat and use a driveshaft to power a propeller mounted outside of the hull. This is opposed to outboard engines, which consist of a single unit containing the engine, driveshaft and propeller and are mounted externally, on the back of the boat.
