Does Metamucil help constipation?

Metamucil is used to treat constipation. It is a bulk-forming laxative, meaning it increases the bulk in stool, which causes the bowels to move, according to WebMD. Metamucil also increases the amount of water in stool, which makes it softer and allows it to pass through the body easier.
Metamucil contains psyllium, which is what causes the bulk to form in stool. Psyllium may cause an allergic reaction in some people, or be dangerous for people who have trouble swallowing, according to Everyday Health. Common side effects of psyllium are bloating and a minor change in bowel habits. Severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, choking, constipation and rectal bleeding are not normal.
