What are some methods used to carve tree stumps?

Chainsaw carving is the most common method, supplied by more detailed carving with the use of a carving disc, chisels and a rotary tool. Painting the statue with wood penetrating stains and a finish may accentuate the carving and protects the wood from decay, insects and cracking.

The best material for carving is either fresh stumps or ones that are four years old. If the wood of the stump is still green, it is good to leave the carving to dry under a tarp roof prior to painting it with the finish.

Because the carver works on a standing stump, it is good to make a scaffolding before the beginning of the works.
