What is a Minneola orange ?

A Minneola tangelo is a hybrid of the Dancy mandarin orange and the Duncan grapefruit. The U.S. Department of Agriculture developed the Minneola tangelo and released it for the first time in 1931.

Minneola tangelos are identified by their deep orange hues, pebbled surfaces and slightly elongated stems. Grown mostly in California, these types of citrus fruits usually do not have seeds and peel very easily. Minneola tangelos range from palm-sized to grapefruit-sized. The sweet, slightly tart fruit is available in the United States between January and April. The fruit is usually eaten raw, but it is sometimes grilled and used to top salads.
