What is a Mohawk haircut?

The traditional Mohawk-style haircut is achieved by growing a strip of hair in the middle of the head from front to back. Both sides of the head are shaved close to the scalp.
The Mohawk haircut gets its name from the Mohawk Native American tribe. It was a popular style among Mohawk men during the colonial era. There is evidence that this hairstyle has roots in ancient Egypt. In the modern era, both men and women sport Mohawk haircuts.
The hairstyle saw a resurgence in popularity during the 1980s punk rock era. The style has been updated to what is known as a faux hawk, which is similar but much more subtle in appearance.
