How do you find morels?

Morel mushrooms are found in a majority of the United States from late March until early May, growing in or near forest areas. During the spring, they are found on south facing slopes in more open areas, and later in more heavily wooded areas on north facing slopes.

Normally, the first Morels of the year may be found when temperatures during the day reach the 60's and night time lows are not below 40 degrees. Morels often grow near dead trees, and the first mushrooms of the season are generally small. It is vital to identify Morel mushrooms properly. There are some mushrooms that resemble Morels that are poisonous. Small Morels may even cause gastrointestinal distress.
