One of the biggest movie stars of the 20th century, John Wayne is remembered for his performances in films such as "Rio Bravo," "The Searchers," "Stagecoach," "El Dorado" and "Sands of Iwo Jima." He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in "True Grit," released in 1969.

Born Marion Robert Morrison on May 26, 1907, Wayne started working in the film industry after a bodysurfing injury caused him to lose his football scholarship to the University of Southern California. He based his screen persona on Wyatt Earp, with whom he was close friends. Wayne's final film, "The Shootist," was released in 1976.
