Why are movies released in theaters on Fridays?

New movies are typically released on Fridays to make for a longer weekend when most people go to see a movie. The opening weekend that covers the period between the first Friday to the first Sunday is an important metric that sets the momentum for a movie's box office success.

However, not all markets release movies on Friday. For example, Italy and many Latin American countries release new movies on Thursdays to stretch the movie weekend and boost cinema ticket sales. As of September 2015, "Jurassic World" holds the record for the biggest worldwide opening weekend for a movie, followed by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and "Furious 7."
