The average person burns approximately 250 calories per hour on a stationary bike, according to WebMD. This means they would have to cycle for 14 hours to lose one pound, but the loss would vary according to the size of the cyclist and the intensity of the ride.
The Mayo Clinic estimates that a 160-pound person riding at 10 mph would burn roughly 290 calories per hour, but if that same person increased the riding speed to 16 to 19 mph, the burn rate rises to anywhere from 960 to 1,140 calories per hour. In that case, about three hours of cycling would result in a one-pound loss.
