If too much ground black pepper or other seasonings have been added to a recipe the inclusion of potatoes and starchy vegetables can dilute the flavor. There are various methods that can be used to correct too much seasoning.
Adding dairy products, such as milk, sour cream, or plain yogurt, can tone down the heat level of a dish. Serving these diary items on the side of the dish offers the same benefit.
The addition of 1 to 2 tablespoons of peanut butter can also rectify the use of too much black or hot pepper. Similarly, a teaspoon of sugar can be used the same way. The juice from acidic fruits, including lemons and limes can cut the heat or spice in a recipe, and vinegar also works well.
