There is no charge to apply for a Social Security number, a new or replacement card or benefits. Social Security benefits can be applied for online, but Social Security numbers and cards must be applied for at a Social Security Administration office by presenting the proper documentation.

Social Security benefits available for online application include retirement, disability, child's, lump-sum death and Medicare. Additionally, widows and widowers or parent's of a deceased child can apply for transfer of benefits online.
