An average healthy horse with a height of 48 inches from its hoof to the highest part of its back weighs about 550 pounds. An average horse weighs about 760 at a height of 52 inches, or 13 hands, and about 870 pounds at 56 inches, or 14 hands.

A 15-hand, healthy horse weighs about 1,015 pounds, and a healthy weight for a 16-hand or 64-inch horse is 1,115 pounds. Draft horses can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Weight is an important factor when determining a yearling's health, as too much weight places unnecessary stress on newly developing bones, and too little weight or poor nutrition can stunt its growth.
