According to CNN Money in 2010, the average salary of a horticulturist was $35,000 per year with the mid-career pay being around $50,800 per year. A degree in horticulture can prepare you for a variety of careers including sales, research and even grounds keeping.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that in 2012 persons in a similar occupation, that of landscape architect, earned around $64,180 per year.

Horticulture focuses on the science of growing fruits, vegetables, grass, herbs, spices and a variety of other plants. Most horticulture programs prepare a student in all aspects of plant science, and students can even add electives to broaden their career choices to management, education, biological science and even journalism.
