According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the annual wage for Illustrators is $44,380 as of May 2012. The lowest ten percent of illustrators make $19,200, while the top ten percent earn over $93,200.
To become an illustrator, a minimum education of a high school diploma or GED is usually required. Aspiring illustrators are encouraged to take art classes to develop and hone their artistic skills. A post-secondary education ranges from single classes to Bachelor's or Master's degrees in Studio Art or Art History. Desired qualities in an illustrator include artistic ability, business skills, creativity, customer service skills, dexterity and interpersonal skills.
