How much money do people spend on clothes?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, the average household spent $1,700 on clothing, footwear and related services. This expense accounted for 3.5 percent of the total yearly budget.

Most of the money, $562, was spent on apparel purchases for females aged 16 years and older. The next highest spending level, $304, was for men at least 16 years old. 6 percent of the clothing budget, $101, was allotted for girls ages 2 through 15. Clothing purchases for all children under age 2 was $91. The expenditure for boys from 2 and 15 was lowest at $78. Eighteen percent of the apparel budget, $303, was spent on footwear for all family members.
