The median salary for a sign language interpreter as of 2012 is $45,430 per year, as stated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This works out to an hourly wage of approximately $21.84 an hour. Wages vary based on experience, certifications, industry and education.
Interpreters must have a bachelors degree and perform a certain amount of on-the-job training. The National Association for the Deaf and Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf both offer certifications that help command higher wages.
Sign language interpreters are often able to perform freelance work to increase their earnings. They may work for a few hours at an event or conference in addition to their regular job.
