Courses to be a hospice chaplain range from 12 to 36 months. It takes 100-200 hours of practicum in order to be certified as well.
A hospice chaplain provides religious support to those that are terminally ill. A hospital chaplain requires more schooling. It generally requires a graduate degree before a person can begin work. Spiritual counselors have basically the same role as hospice chaplains and this does not require any certification.
The chaplain or counselor's main job is to play a role in addressing fears and concerns the patients may be dealing with due to their own religious beliefs. They are also there to listen to the patient and family in their time of despair.
