How much water can a sponge absorb?

The amount of water a sponge can absorb depends on many factors. The material the sponge is made out of, the structure of the sponge and the size of the sponge all affect how much water the sponge can absorb.

The absorbent capacity of a sponge is strongly affected by how the spaces inside the sponge are connected to each other and how much space there is to hold water inside of the structure of the sponge. The material the sponge is made out of strongly affects the rate of water absorption; some materials actively absorb water and draw it into the interior of the sponge, while other materials accumulate water passively.
