Where does mucus come from?

Mucus comes from mucus-producing tissues found on the inner walls of the gastrointestinal tract, mouth, sinuses, nose, lungs and throat. Mucus is produced in these areas of the body in order to protect them and prevent them from drying out.

Mucus is effective in stopping dust and harmful bacteria before they enter the body, which is due to its thick viscosity and sticky nature. The antibodies in mucus also assist in determining if any harmful viruses or bacteria are trying to assault the body. Mucus production is extremely important for the human body, according to Michael M. Johns, III, MD of Emory University.
