According to the British Myology Society, myology is a branch of medicine concerned with muscular disorders and diseases. Myology deals primarily with disorders of skeletal muscle, which composes the body's muscular system.
The British Myology Society states that professionals in myology promote awareness, education and clinical treatment for diseases such as spinal muscular atrophy and myasthenia gravis. MedlinePlus reports that muscular disorders are often caused by injury, overuse, genetic disorder, inflammation, nervous disease, cancer, infections and as side effects of certain medications; however, some cases do not have an obvious cause. Muscular disorders commonly cause pain, weakness and paralysis in some cases.
