The groups of citizen soldiers who stood ready to fight the British were called militias. Militias consisted of part-time citizen soldiers that maintained law and order in the colonies.

A militia was not considered a professional military force, but militiamen did play a vital role in the Revolutionary War. Many served as guards at prisoner-of-war camps, while others provided protection from Indians on the frontier. Some tasks were as simple as herding cattle and gathering provisions. While militiamen rarely saw action on the battlefield, over 3,000 accompanied Governor Thomas Nelson at the Siege of Yorktown, Virginia in October of 1781.
