The name of the ocean that surrounded Pangaea was called "Panthalassa." The supercontinent of Pangaea was completely formed around 270 million years ago, and Panthalassa was the global ocean that surrounded this land mass.
As Pangaea eventually started to break apart and form the modern continents, the Panthalassa transformed from a global ocean to a number of modern oceans like the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Pangaea began breaking apart during the Early Jurassic Period, around 200 million years ago. The German meteorologist Alfred Wegener proposed a theory of continental drift and, by 1912, had introduced the idea of the supercontinent Pangaea.
