What is the Natchez tribe?

The Natchez tribe is a group of Native American people who originally lived in the Natchez Bluffs area, near the present-day city of Natchez, Mississippi. The Natchez Indians were successful farmers who grew corn, beans and squash.

The Natchez tribe are noted for being the only Mississippian culture with complex chiefdom characteristics to have survived for a long period of time after the beginning of the European colonization of America.

In pre-colonial times, they were part of the mound building cultures in the Mississippi River Valley.

As of 2015, the primary settlements of the Natchez Nation are within the southern halves of the Muscogee and Cherokee Nations in Oklahoma.
