When do you need Dexron II transmission fluid?

Dexron II automatic transmission fluid is most commonly used in General Motors vehicles built between 1972 and 1993. Most of these vehicles can also use Dexron III fluids, as the Dexron III formula was designed for backward compatibility with automatic transmissions using Dexron II.

Dexron is the brand name for almost all GM automatic transmission fluids since 1968, though the Dexron name is also used for some gear oils. While many manufacturers continue to make Dexron II and Dexron III-compatible transmission fluids, GM moved to using the Dexron IV formula in 2006 and only manufactures Dexron IV-compatible transmissions and transmission fluid as of 2016.
